Shamrocks for Peace.: a St. Patrick’s Day Vigil

at Congressman Rahm Emanuel’s Office

Join residents of the 5th Congressional District in a vigil at Congressman Rahm Emanuel’s office.

Date: March 17

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: 3742 West Irving Park

The vigil commemorate the meeting that 5th Congressional District residents had with the Congressman four years ago to ask him to join them in opposing the war before it began. He refused to do so. This vigil is part of the national United for Peace and Justice campaign to call for an end to the war—March 20th is the beginning of the fourth year of the war in Iraq. Over the last four years there have been numerous visits to the Congressman’s office, vigils, and petitions signed by hundreds of 5th congressional district residents. We have urged him to join other Illinois congresspersons in opposing funding for the war; to join Congressman Jack Murtha in calling for the end to the war; to publicly oppose the war. He has not done so, despite the fact that he has conducted two surveys in the 5th congressional district which have shown that residents of this district, like the American people, are opposed to the war. It is time for this Congressman to join his constituents in saying it must end.

March 17 is also St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish people opposed the war in Iraq and held a massive demonstration prior to the start of the war. Feel free to wear shamrocks for peace and sing along with local musician, Andrew Calhoun, who will share some Irish songs for peace.
